While India keeps on surprising me in many ways, there is one thing that remains constant and predictable: lunch.
It consists of rice, chapatti (Indian pita), some form of cooked vegetable and a soupy beany liquid to pour over this ensemble.
I was delighted on my first day to eat this delicious real Indian food for the first time in my life, but the westerner that I am, soon got used to the monotony of this daily meal.
As a young Parisian I am used to eating a variety of delicious French foods with my gourmet friends, often sparking passionate debates on where to find the best macarons or foie gras in the city!
As a college student in Canada, I was considered a food and wine snob, refusing to buy marbled cheddar or a 1 L bottle of wine appropriately called Porte d’Enfer.
Many of us enjoy world cuisines and within the same week it is common for us to go eat Lebanese falafel, Japanese sushi, Swiss fondue, Italian pizza and an American cheeseburger. My enthusiasm towards Indian food started to decline, once I discovered the lack of diversity I would have in my daily life.
How lucky we are to be able to taste a piece of Ethiopia, Peru or China without having to leave our city!
